Medicare Enrollment: What to Know for 2026

Charles Leach Agency Health

Each fall, Medicare beneficiaries have the opportunity to review and adjust their health and prescription drug coverage. With important updates coming in 2026, this year’s enrollment period is especially significant.

2025 Open Enrollment Dates (for 2026 Coverage)

The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7, 2025. During this time, you can:

  • Switch between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage (Part C).
  • Join, drop, or change a Part D prescription drug plan.
  • Compare new Medicare Advantage options and make changes as your needs require.

Any changes you make will take effect on January 1, 2026.

If you’re already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you’ll also have another opportunity to make a one-time switch during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, which runs from January 1 through March 31, 2026.

Key Changes Beneficiaries Should Understand for 2026

Several updates will affect both costs and coverage beginning in 2026:

1. Prescription Drug Savings

  • The annual cap on out-of-pocket Part D costs rises from $2,000 in 2025 to $2,100 in 2026.
  • The Part D deductible increases from $590 in 2025 to $615 for 2026.
  • Medicare’s first negotiated drug prices take effect in 2026, reducing costs on 10 widely used medications.

2. Original Medicare Costs

  • Part B premiums are projected to rise to about $206.50 per month (final figures will be announced in fall 2025).
  • The Part B deductible is expected to increase to $288.
  • Part A deductibles and premiums will also see slight increases for the small percentage of people who pay them.

3. Medicare Advantage (Part C)

  • Average premiums will be announced in late 2025, but plan reimbursements from the government are increasing, which could affect available benefits.

4. Other Benefits

  • Adult vaccines recommended by the CDC will continue to be covered at no cost under Part D.
  • Insulin costs will remain capped.
  • New marketing and enrollment standards will make plan information clearer, starting in October 2025.
